System landscape analysis

What runs, what overlaps, what is at risk, and what can be retired.

What the analysis answers

Over time a system landscape grows without an overall plan: systems are bought for a need, integrations are added and nobody has the full picture. A system landscape analysis gathers it in one view and answers four questions: what do we run, what overlaps, what is vulnerable, and what can we retire.

The result is a basis for decisions, not a technical report. It should be usable by both IT and the business.

How it is approached

It starts with an inventory of systems, owners, suppliers, contracts and integrations. The systems are then tied to the business processes they support, so you can see what actually matters to operations.

Each system is assessed on a few dimensions: business value, technical condition, risk, cost and supplier situation. That gives a comparable picture.

What comes out of it

Typically an overview of the landscape, a list of overlaps and risks, and a proposed order for retiring, consolidating or renewing. The overview is also a good starting point for information security work and for supplier dialogue.

The analysis is worth repeating every few years so the landscape does not grow out of sight again.
